Awareness of Period Poverty & TSS at UCB

We were tasked with helping the University College Birmingham support their students in the quest to end period poverty. Being a leading washroom services provider, we were able to provide them with exactly what they needed. Here’s how we helped…

Firstly, what is Period Poverty?

Period poverty is a global issue that affects women, girls and people who menstruate. The ‘End Period Poverty’ movement aims to provide access to menstrual products, safe, hygienic spaces in which to use them, and the right to manage menstruation without shame or stigma.

Scotland has recently just become the first country in the world to offer period related products for free. And many organisations across the UK are following suit.

Free Sanitary Products Station

With period poverty in mind, UCB wanted to offer their students free sanitary products. As you can see from the photos below, we provided them with Sanitary Product Stations, which were placed in washrooms across the site.

These stations are visible and prominent, allowing students to recognise and use these free sanitary products. UCB is also easily able to top up these stations when necessary.

Toxic Shock Syndrome Awareness

As well as providing free sanitary products, UCB also wanted to seize the opportunity to educate students on Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). TSS is a rare, but life-threatening disease caused by bacteria getting into the system. It is often associated with tampon use among women.

A poster was designed to be placed on the Sanitary Product Stations. The poster alerts students to the free sanitary products but also explains what TSS is and how to prevent it. See the poster below.
