Urinal Water Management Systems – Improve hygiene, cut costs and waste

How to reduce waste, cut cost and improving hygiene with Urinal Water Management Systems

Water is one of the most wasted things in a male washroom but often it’s never really thought about.

Urinals continue to flush automatically throughout the day and night, regardless of usage. This outdated approach increases water consumption and drives up costs with unnecessary strain on the environment.

Urinal water management systems offer a smarter, more efficient solution and help businesses take control of water usage.  They also maintain hygiene standards and improve overall washroom performance.

Why does urinal water management matter?

Traditional urinal systems are often set to run continuously and this can result in thousands of unnecessary flushes every year. This wastes significant amounts of water and money. An unmanaged system will flush up to 96 times per day, compared to significantly reduced usage when a water management is introduced.

In fact, UK regulations such as the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 require urinals to have an automatic system in place to control water flow, highlighting just how important proper management is.

How urinal water management systems work

Modern systems are designed to ensure that urinals only flush at managed regular intervals depending on footfall, rather than continuously.

Flow Control Water Management Units

Our flow control systems regulate how often urinals flush throughout the day, so instead of every few minutes, they can be programmed to flush between 1 and 36 times per day. (Depending on usage your levels – we work with you to get this right!). The result is controlled and consistent flushing, reduced water consumption and, of course, lower operational costs.

Installing these systems can save hundreds of pounds per year from a single cistern so it makes them a highly cost-effective upgrade. (And once installed, you can forget about them!)

What are urinal sleeves and mats?

While water management systems control flushing, complementary products such as urinal sleeves and mats play an equally important role in maintaining hygiene and performance.

Urinal Sleeves

Urinal sleeves work by reducing flushing frequency (to as little as four times a day!) whilst maintaining cleanliness within the urinal and preventing blockages.

Urinal Mats

Urinal mats are placed in the urinals and are primarily there to support hygience whilst also providing several key benefits:

  • Absorb splashes with dual bristle technology
  • Reduce odours by limiting the spread of bacteria
  • Provides Fragrance for up to 60 days.

Urinal mats are a simple but highly effective way to support overall washroom hygiene and can be replaced on a regular schedule (often monthly).

What are the cost and environmental benefits?

One of the biggest advantages of urinal water management systems is the combination of cost savings and sustainability. Businesses can immediately cut their water useage, lower utility bills and reduce environmental impact by reducing unnecessary flushing.

An unmanaged system can waste hundreds of thousands of litres of water per year, all of which can be significantly reduced with the right solution in place.

This makes water management a key (and very simple) part of any organisation’s sustainability strategy.

Improving hygiene and user experience

It’s important to note that reducing water usage does not mean compromising on hygiene. Water management systems will reduce odour build up, prevent maintenance issues, and create a cleaner and more pleasant washroom experience – all while maintaining appropriate flush levels.

Combined with sleeves and mats, they form a complete system that supports both cleanliness and efficiency. Urinal water management works best as part of a joined-up approach to washroom services – it’s what we do best.

At Hygenie, we assess each site individually to recommend the most suitable combination of products, whether that’s a school, office, leisure facility or public venue.
