Walk into a washroom, changing area, reception or other commercial space and one of the first things you notice is often something you can’t see – the smell.
A pleasant, fresh environment can immediately create a positive impression. But when there is an unpleasant odour, simply introducing a stronger fragrance isn’t always the answer. Simply adding fragrance means you’re just adding to the original odour – that isn’t commercial odour control!
At Hygenie Washrooms, we take a different approach. We believe effective commercial odour control starts with understanding why the odour is there, using the right technology to tackle it (in the right place) and then, where appropriate, adding a carefully selected fragrance to enhance the environment.
It’s about remove first, scent second – and getting the positioning of both systems right is crucial.
Why just covering up an odour isn’t enough
Commercial washrooms and other busy environments can experience persistent odours for many reasons. Poor ventilation, high footfall, organic compounds, waste, bacteria, mould and other contaminants can all contribute – imagine a sweaty, damp changing room after a local Sunday morning football match!
An air freshener can introduce a pleasant fragrance, but fragrance alone isn’t designed to eliminate every underlying source of a challenging malodour.
This is particularly important in areas such as busy washrooms, changing facilities, healthcare environments and other spaces where odours can quickly become noticeable.
That’s where air purification technology such as AIRsteril can make a difference.
Hygenie’s approach is to assess the environment first and then recommend the most appropriate solution for the space, its usage and the odour challenge.
How AIRsteril tackles odours at the source
AIRsteril comes with technology designed to treat the causes of unwanted odours rather than simply masking them.
It uses a combination of technologies, including dual-waveband ultraviolet (UV) light, photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), a titanium dioxide (TiO₂) catalyst and controlled ozone/superoxide ion technology.
We know that’s a lot of industry talk so, what does that actually mean?
Germicidal UV
As air passes through the unit, the UV technology helps to inactivate microorganisms including bacteria, viruses and mould by disrupting their DNA and preventing reproduction.
Photocatalytic Oxidation
The UV light reacts with the titanium dioxide catalyst to create highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. These help break down volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the air – compounds which can contribute to persistent odours.
Superoxide ions and controlled ozone
The interaction between the UV wavelengths and catalyst also creates reactive oxygen species, including superoxide ions. AIRsteril states that targeted ozone assists the purification process and helps tackle unpleasant odours.
The result is a system that continuously treats the environment. AIRsteril’s washroom systems are designed for continuous operation and use a combination of technologies to eliminate unpleasant washroom odours and help control microorganisms in the air and on exposed surfaces.
But what about that lovely fresh smell?
This is where we believe air purification and commercial scenting work particularly well together – provided they are positioned correctly.
We’re not saying don’t use fragrance, quite the opposite.
Once you’ve addressed the underlying odour problem, fragrance can be used to create a more welcoming environment and, in some settings, become part of the overall customer experience.
The important thing is that the two systems need to complement each other rather than cancelling each other out.
That’s where Hygenie’s experience really matters.
It’s all about where you put the units
You could have the best air purification technology and the most beautiful fragrance in the world, but if the units aren’t positioned correctly, you may not get the results you’re looking for and one could well cancel the other out.
We look at the size and layout of the space, airflow, ventilation, footfall, usage and the location of the potential odour source before recommending where units should be installed.
For example, an AIRsteril unit may be positioned to address the area where odours are generated or where air needs to be treated, while a scenting unit can be positioned in a different area to distribute fragrance effectively.
The objective isn’t to have one unit fighting against another, which is why the position of each unit is crucial so each unit can do its job properly and efficiently.
At Hygenie, we use our expertise of AIRSteril products and knowledge of commercial scenting to help customers choose the right equipment, fragrance and positioning for their premises.
Our scenting solutions aren’t just an air freshener
Hygenie’s commercial Airfresh range provides a wide choice of fragrance solutions, from washroom air fresheners through to larger-area scenting systems.
Our range includes systems designed for different room sizes and applications, with programmable options and advanced diffusion technologies depending on the environment.
And there’s plenty of choice when it comes to fragrance.
We currently offer hundreds of fragrance options, from fresh and aquatic scents to floral, woody, citrus, food-inspired and seasonal fragrances. We can also work with customers on bespoke fragrances to create something more individual to their brand.
Creating a signature fragrance for your brand
This is where scent marketing becomes particularly interesting.
We all know how strongly smell can be connected to memory. A distinctive fragrance can become part of the experience of visiting a particular business or venue.
Imagine walking into a hotel and immediately recognising its signature scent. Or entering a reception, retail environment or leisure venue and being greeted by a fragrance that feels completely aligned with the brand.
That’s scent marketing.
Hygenie can help businesses select an existing fragrance or explore a bespoke scent that reflects their brand identity and the experience they want to create, all helping with commercial odour control.
It’s a subtle way of reinforcing brand identity – and unlike visual branding, scent works quietly in the background.
Where can scent marketing work?
Almost anywhere.
Hygenie provides scenting solutions for a wide range of commercial environments, including:
- Hotels and hospitality
- Retail
- Restaurants, bars and leisure venues
- Gyms and spas
- Corporate offices and reception areas
- Education
- Healthcare
- Nurseries and childcare
- Changing rooms
- Large public venues
Different environments have different requirements, which is why we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. A busy shopping centre washroom has very different requirements from a hotel reception, a school changing area or a healthcare waiting room.
Remove, refresh, remember…
Effective odour management is primarily about understanding the environment.
- Identify the challenge
Where is the odour coming from? How is the space used? What are the ventilation and airflow conditions? - Remove the problem
Where appropriate, AIRsteril technology can be used to treat unwanted odours and improve air quality at source. - Add the right fragrance
Once the environment is being effectively managed, commercial scenting can introduce a fresh, carefully selected fragrance. - Position everything correctly
We consider the location, size, airflow and usage of the premises to help ensure the purification and scenting systems work alongside each other in their respective positions. - Create an experience
For businesses that want to go further, a signature or bespoke fragrance can become part of the overall customer experience and brand identity.
Fresh air first. Fragrance second. The right position always.
At Hygenie, we look at the whole environment so our team can advise on air purification, commercial fragrance, scent marketing and, importantly, how the different systems can work together.
Because when it comes to odour control, covering up the problem isn’t the same as solving it.
And when it comes to fragrance, the right scent in the right place can do much more than simply make a room smell nice.
It can help create an environment that feels cleaner, fresher, more welcoming – and more memorable.
